New York may ban iPods while crossing street Reuters Wednesday, February 7, 2007; 11:53 AM NEW YORK (Reuters) – New Yorkers who blithely cross the street listening to an iPod or talking on a cell phone could soon face a $100 fine.

Just last night I went for an hour long walk, at -25C, while my earmuffs were plugged into an iPod and I crossed several streets. I guess I can understand this concept as I’ve found that even at low volumes, you are quite distracted by the voices directly in your ear. I also find that it’s quite different that listening to the radio in the car, much more distracting.

Perhaps they should enforce this in all public places. Just look around while you’re walking in the mall. Almost everyone seems to have something plugged into their ears or be talking on a cell phone. At least the collisions are at a much lower speed.
