  • Easton & Clark: 2023 Christmas Concert

On December 20, 2023 Shirley and I attended Easton and Clark’s school Christmas Concert at St. John Brebeuf School.

The concert was an excellent Christ centred production that involved K-6 and told the traditional Christmas story in a fun kid friendly way with some contemporary twists. Our seats were in the centre of the sanctuary which provided a good view of the production but was a little far back for my camera and len. I cropped all the photos to emphasis the stage and performers which resulted in photographs like this.

I put all the concert photos over on my flickr site at Easton & Clark Christmas Concert 2023.

Of course we were there primarily to see Easton and Clark who were buried in with all their classmates. Here is Easton’s group. That’s him just to the left of the Rosenthal’s sign in the back row.

Similarly, Clark’s in a large group with his class.

The good looking guy in the centre. ?

And then there is the grand finale with everyone on stage and spilling off on both sides.

  • Grandkid questions

    Grandkid questions

Grandad, what do the colored flags and spray paint on lawns and streets mean?

    Call before you dig

Well, I knew yellow was for gas and after that I wasn’t sure. They all mean something is buried there and don’t dig in that spot unless you know what you’re doing.

Here’s a key to the flags’ colors:

RED – Electric Power Lines, Cables, Conduit and Lighting Cables

YELLOW – Gas, Oil, Steam Petroleum or Gaseous Materials

ORANGE – Communication, Cable TV, Alarm or Signal Lines, Cables or Conduit

BLUE – Water, Irrigation and Slurry Lines

GREEN – Sewers and Drain Lines

    PINK – Temporary Survey Markings

    WHITE – Proposed Excavation

    Kayak is a Palindrome

Just a random fact because we gave Dane a kayak for his upcoming birthday to maximize the in-water time this summer.

When there are brothers you pretty much need two of these.

Peas in a Pod? Two in a Kayak? Summer Fun!

  • Thankful

    Thankful

A while back I decided to make an effort to be more thankful. And to that end I started a list on the iPhone Reminders app and I get a daily prompt to put something on the “Thankful” list. Now not every day gets and entry but most do. Another facet of this initiative is to monthly review the list to remind me of all the things I’m thankful for.

As a part of this month’s review I thought that once in a while I’d share one of these “Thankful” items on the blog. First up is this one.

Easton is my Grandson and this phone call was quite out of the blue and I don’t normally get any phone calls for the Grandkids so this was kind of special. The tree fort is at the lake and for me this meant he was thinking of good times at the lake and planning for more good times in the future. ?

  • Something Fishy

On the weekend, August 19-21, Parker and Dane had their friend Aryton down at the lake. It was a busy weekend with swimming, tubing, seadoo rides, kneeboarding and fishing!

This was Aryton’s first time fishing and he hit the trifecta, first fish, biggest fish and most fish! Over several outings on the weekend the boys collectively caught 18 bass.

Dane has one on the line!

Fun fact: Aryton’s grandfather was a big Formula One fan and he is named after Aryton Senna, in honour of his grandfather.

Two days of fishing just around the corner of our point yielded 15 bass in short order, lots of action! The three boys kept me busy getting fish off the hook and into a bucket.

  • Best widget so far

    Best widget so far

OK, so I’m a bit of an Apple fan, not quite a fan boy, but up there.

With the latest iOS and the ability for widgets on the Home Screen I did some playing around and settled on this Apple widget at the top of my screen.

By default it shows my 6 things in a sort of random, but also some what intelligent way.

First thing in the morning I get a display about what apps I might want to launch, scarily predicting what I might like to do based on past usage. Then the weather, generally useful, the calendar for the day with the next 1-2 events, again useful. Top Apple News stories which is OK but I have not yet succumbed to subscribing. A Map, a bit of a mystery for me and not yet useful. And then there is the best of all!

It’s the photo! Generally, some combination of Grandkids like today’s where we were going to the 2019 Santa Claus parade with all of them together, which is a bit of a rare event to go somewhere all together with just Shirley and I. As I recall it was like hearing cats, but a lot of fun.

If it’s not Grandkids it’s some other photo that Apple has figured out as a “Featured Photo”. Not sure how they do that. Some of them I’ve flagged as “liked” other are well… just photos that show up.

Always brings a smile to my face and an extra bit of happiness to my day.

  • Geocaches for Grandkids

    Geocaches for Grandkids

I’ve been a geocacher for a few years, since 2004, and been sporadically active over the years. Last year I introduced my Grandkids to geocaching and it was a pretty big success. A lot of it was probably due to the first cache we found which was loaded with toys! They could hardly believe they could find these things and then just take stuff. This was tempered a bit when I explained that you should also leave something and it was more about the hunting than the scoring some new trinkets.

During 2019 I got the idea to create a cache for each one of them. We launched The Parker and then kind of let things slide a bit. Earlier this year I pulled together the other three with the idea of hiding them with each of the Grandkids. Well, that wasn’t working out too well as on hot summer days when they were at the lake nobody really wanted to leave the dock to wander around in the bush.

So, I recently hid them myself and hopefully we can “find” each of them together with the grandkids in the near future.
