  • Christmas Eve

Shirley and I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas.

With Shirley at home this year we seem to be more prepared than ever and by “we” I mean Shirley, she’s amazing! We have so much baking that it’s going to take some extra special restraint on my part not to gain 10lbs. Some traditions continue and some new ones are being built. Tonight we’re at church and volunteering. Afterwards it’s a traditional evening with good long time friends.

Christmas morning will just be Shirley and I for exchanging our gifts with each other over a leisurely cup of coffee followed by Eggs Benedict for breakfast. Eric, Dez, Scott & Mandi will join us later in the afternoon for Christmas Part 2 and a family dinner.
Enjoy the day with loved ones.

What to do? It seems like I’ll need to get a more current Blackberry to resolve this crisis. This is planned obsolescence to the max.

  • Days gone by

Here is a picture that brings back some memories.

It’s at the lake with the whole family, at least the whole family as back on August 5, 1993, things have changed over the years. My dad is taking the picture and my mom is on the left at the back. Gail & Gord with Ian and Craig and Shirley and I with Eric And Scott around the table. To me this picture symbolizes what the lake was all about for my parents, especially my dad. A place where the family could gather all together and share in the lake experience. I remember working with him as we built the cottage from plans that were slightly more that the back of a napkin, actually two fairly simple drawings. The design goal was always about having enough space so that everyone could be there at the same time.

Today, it’s rare that everyone is there at the same time. Distance, scheules, relationships and life seems a little more complicated than back in the day. Perhaps I was just more oblivious back them. Today, As I sit in the livingroom looking out at the snow and Christmas is approaching I can feel a whistful longing for the lake and the way things were. But, life moves forward, things change, and I need to adapt to the new realities. The lake will alway hold a very special place in my heart for the memories that were forged in that place with loved ones in my life. Change can never take that away.

  • Decorations

I’ve decorated my work cubicle for the Christmas Season.

Red and green, get it? Yeah, I know, lame.

  • Retreat thoughts

It’s Sunday morning and the camp is slowly waking up. Last night was much quieter as they read the riot act at breakfast yesterday. In fact I was the last guy in after watchig the late movie, Gladiator.
The sessions have been good and thought provoking. The team sessions were good as well and I got to know some of the other volunteers. I was impressed by many of the young guys with their passion for the Lord, their knowledge of the Word and their insights into world events.
I spent some time talking with the band and Darren S. a friend of Jon B., a very interesting guy.
I wonder what today will bring?

  • First night at camp

Well , it was an experience.
The late night movie was Wall-e which I’d previously reported was Lam-e, so I opted for some reading time and turned in shortly after midnight. I was the only guy in the room. Shortly after settling in one of my roomies flys throught the room and asks on the way out “crashing so earlly?”. Not a good sign.
There is the somewhat expected racket through the night and I drift in and out all night, at least untill about 3am. In a semi-consious state I’m hearing a rhythmic “thwak, thwak, thwak”. It sounds like somebody hitting a stapler on a hollow desk. Then the memories start coming back from college days. That sound is a fast and furious air hockey game in the rec room below our sleeping area.
I’m up at 8 and pretty much alone and have the showers to myself. These young guys may be able to party all night but they are not so good about greeting the day. Breakfast is at 9 and I think about making a racket as I get going, but I don’t, let the lads sleep on. Soon enough they will be waking up at 5am and wishing they could sleep in forever llike they are today.

  • Something different

I’m at Camp ceadarwood a YFC facility for a volunteer retreat. I’ve decided to volunteer and get involved with a climbing ministry as a result of my summer mountain adventure.
I’m not sure at all what I’m getting into, but its going to be an excellent adventure.
First session at 9 and then late night movies or sleep. Hmmm what to do.

  • People want to know

I’m not sure why they want to know, but there must be a good reason. Perhaps it’s helpful to express your emotions about the loss of a beloved pet. How My Hamster Died gives you that opportunity to release your inner emotional baggage regarding your hamster’s demise. There are some touching stories plus it’s a great little site that Eric created.

Growing up I was never allowed furry pets due to allergies, or at least that the story my parents gave, but we did have fish. There is a lot less emotional attachment to fish. When you get tired of them they get flushed. I was told we were releasing them back into the ocean. The things you can get away with as a parent.

How My Hamster Died – Page 1

At the young age of 6…. I would watch my little buddy, “Tree” run on his wheel. Day after day, he would run happily, until one fateful morning! As the sun was shining and he was going for his morning jog, his little paw got caught on the wheel. It violently flipped him around and broke him little neck!! He let a small sweak and passed over to the other side. I was devistated (as any 6 year old would be) and my mom tried to comfort me by replacing “Tree” with a new hamster….. It was never the same……:(

  • The drought is over

That’s right after seven or is it eight years, the Stewart household once again has… baseboards!

Man that renovating! One thing just leads to another and another and before you know it, you’re putting up baseboards.
