Vancouver Island Trip – Day Three

I refer to this day as the 50/50 day as I had planned for four activities but we only accomplished two. ?

First stop, the Dallas Road Waterfront Trail

After some walking about it’s time for some lunch. Today, it’s the Flying Oyster Grill.

It’s a very nice place right on the harbour in downtown Victoria and they have lots of GF GF options.

Our next planned stop is the Malahat Skywalk which is about 45 minutes away.

I check their website and the last tickets sold are at 3pm. We won’t make it in time, we’ve spent too much time walking around, parking the car and having lunch.

However, item number four on the list is to take a 1/2hr small ferry ride from Mill Bay, which is near the Malahat Skywalk, to Brentwood Bay which is fairly close to Gail’s condo. So, I drive for about 45 minutes and get into the lineup for the ferry. The ferry is just coming in but it only takes 10 cars at a time.

We’re way more than number 10 in line. Shirley talks to the people ahead of us and determined that the wait will be way too long. So, no fun ferry ride as we pull out of line and drive back the way we came. I really dislike backtracking and was looking forward to the ferry adventure.

Back at the ranch it’s dinner, some TV and off to bed. A lot of driving today. Perhaps we’ll get to #3 &#4 later in the week.

  • Vancouver Island Trip – Day Two

Vancouver Island Trip – Day Two

It’s a nice sunny day with a forecast high of +10° and here is the early morning view from the condo

Cherry Blossoms and lots of green, no snow

After breakfast we head out for a sightseeing walk along the Sidney shoreline.

After lunch I’m on my own so I decide to go to the BC Aviation Museum, which is quite close and the ladies are not interested. But, I‘m excited as I like looking at this kind of stuff, almost as much as looking at boats.

    Hawaii Mars

There was a very interesting tour of the Hawaiian Mars water bomber. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and to tour was great!

    Inside on an upper deck
Part of the water pickup gear
Hard to convey how big this plane is

Read all about it over here: https://skiesmag.com/news/hawaii-mars-makes-final-flight-resting-place-bc-aviation-museum/

Dinner and a little TV and the Day Two is done

Vancouver Island Trip – Day One

We’re up at 2:22am and finalizing last minute packing. The Uber arrives and we’re off to YWG to catch the first leg of the journey to Calgary.

While we’re in Calgary we have some breakfast and then catch the second leg to Victoria.

Calgary Airport Concourse – It’s a long walk to our gate

Gail picks us up at the airport and we’re at her condo in a few minutes. After settling in Gail and I go on a walk in a near by park on the edge of the ocean.

For diner we order some Indian take-out and it’s early to bed. Sitting around flying can be so tiring. ?

Early Sailing Memories: My Fireball Sailboat

This is the Fireball sailboat my dad bought for me in 1970. Some of the early pictures of the start of my sailing adventures. That’s me in the green sweatshirt.

The couple in the canoe are Gary & Donna Wilstrop, good friends and neighbours on Lake Brereton.

    Things that Resonate

Some screen grabs from my daily devotions that struck home.

    Finish strong
You are good and You are with me, always.
Press on, even when it’s hard

  • The Cottage in Winter

    The Cottage in Winter

We usually make a winter trip to the lake but it’s been a while due to all the medical activity and who know what other reasons. But, there was a warm spell of above -10° so we made the trip from a Thursday to Saturday. We enjoyed some very quiet lake time, some fog and lots of sunshine and light to no wind. Very pleasant winter conditions.

It’s getting harder as I get older and the heart and lung issues don’t help. Trudging through the snow, even with snowshoes was hard. Multiple trips from the road to the cottage up and down the driveway were taxing much more than they used to be. And then there is the chopping a hole in the 2′ thick ice and hauling water up 70 vertical feet. But, all in all still an enjoyable time. Just more effort than ever before. Something new in this stage of life.

An improved video might be coming soon. Between the iPhone and the iPad and “magic movie” this didn’t turn out as the director planned. However, for the time being enjoy a look at our lake adventure.

After we left Scott, Mandy, Clark and perhaps Easton (?) arrived for some fun in the snow.

    New and improve(?) video.

  • Workshop Project

This Drill Press Belt Sander project caught my eye in a recent issue of Wordsmith magazine, a long time favourite magazine of mine that I recently re-subscribed to. It seemed like it would come in handy (some day ?) and I wanted a bit of a project to work on. I have a drill press and I thought I had most of the materials hanging around the shop as I keep most odds and sods, just in case.

    The Plan

Well, the deeper I got into the build the more I was making a run to Home Depot or Lee Valley or ordering some needed part online. I didn’t keep accurate track of the costs but I’m guessing a minimum of $200 of wood, knobs, hole saw, bolts, steel rod, threaded rod not to mention the sandpaper belts.

Anyway, in the end, success! Project complete.

    The Result

  • Things that resonate with me

That’s the key. Jesus didn’t ignore His own pain, and He doesn’t ignore ours. Instead He promised to be with us in it. So our feelings can fuel our faith, but only when they send us running to the Father.

5/10/20 seconds of courage can change your life

    Turn worry into worship.

Don’t pick a good word, receive a God word. Oneword

Faith gets you going, but patience keeps your faith growing.

To impact others, we must halt our own agendas.

Remaining in a grateful state of mind each day requires intentionality.

  • Hotel California

Some things in life feel like this…

    Welcome to the Hotel California,
such a lovely place, plenty of room ?
you can check in any time you want
    but you can never leave.

  • Gratitude

What small things happened today that I am grateful for?
Sitting and thinking about the day as opposed to watching TV until bedtime. Unwinding, thinking, a little planning for tomorrow and some reading. Evening BuJo, a rarity.
