  • Crazy Stuff

On Thursday we’d been out to dinner with friends and were back at our house just chatting on the street before calling it a night when a young man starts walking up the street talking very loudly. At first we thought he was just talking on a cell phone to friends, but it turns out he was calling home for help and when he spotted us he came our way for assistance.

It turns out he had just been sprayed point blank in the face with bear or pepper spray by some kids around the corner and he was in agony. Well, what was a quite evening got quite exciting! We took him around the back and had him flushing his face and eyes with water. This provided some relief but not much. Shirley called 911 and help was on it’s way. It also turns out we know his parents through a mutual friend, so Shirley calls around and gets his home number. It turns out nobody’s home because his Mom is already driving around trying to find him from the previous cell phone call.

Soon there is the sound of sirens and the firemen arrive, followed by an ambulance followed by two police cars. The street is now blocked off and blinking like a Christmas tree on steroids. The firemen ask for milk, and proceed to flush his eyes, nose & face with it. This helps take the sting away much better that water as it turns out. Everything wraps up in a few minutes and they take him off to the hospital to get checked over just as him Mom arrives. Quite the night.

There are some sick kids out there. Who’s just hanging around looking for somebody to spray with pepper spray? We find out from the police, that this was the second incident in the neighborhood that night.

  • Flying home

I’m on Westjet 553 in 12F flying back from Toronto. 12F is the exit row and F doesn’t have a seat in front so there is lots of legroom. Another bonus is you get to pre-board.
It’s been a good trip for a sad occasion, the death of my Aunt Florence. She was a wonderful lady and so much like my mom in many ways. Lots of memories stirred.
It was good to re-connect with many of the cousins and uncles. My sister and I stayed at Aunt Floence’s house with family. So many memories in that place from over 54 years and our time when we lived in Toronto.
    A hard transition for all.

  • Dock Post

Yep, I’m sitting on the dock at the lake doing this.
It’s a perfect summer afternoon, nice and warm without being too hot and plenty of sunshine. Today’s big adventure was kayak trip #3 which took me around Sultana Island, a former gold mine site in the late 1800s.
Wildlife sightings included an bald eagles nest with a couple of young birds under the watchfull eye of the parents from a near by tree.
The wind was at my back for the last half of the paddle and I was happy to return to home base after being out about 3 hours.
I think I’ll do a little research on Sultana and go over again next weekend in the boat to take some photos of the remains.

  • Tales from the Cage

A fellow cyclist told me about his morning ride into work while we were picking up our bikes from the lockup cage. He was stopped by the police for running a red light. He admitted to doing it, he just didn’t like the treatment. They asked what he was “carrying”, patted him down and put him in the back of the cruiser. Seems a little excessive.
Oh yeah, then there was the $168 fine!
    Ouch.

  • Hot time in the City

Heat wave hits Winnipeg! I’ve just walked from Portage Place to Winnipeg Square and its hot and humid in the ‘Peg.
I think I’ll take the air conditioned walkway back to the office, after my chai latte break. 😉

  • Soaked

Day 3 of the Commuter Challenge and just another day of bike commuting to work but a wetter ride than usual. The forecast was for rain but it was still dry after I finished my dental appointment at 11 so I took the bike.
I knew it was likely and sure enough the ride home was in a steady downpour. I even got the big splash from a passing car. Not that it made any difference at that point because I was completely soaked! (update)

  • Comuting by bike

Today is the first day of the Commuter Challenge for 2007 where you’re encouraged to commute using sustainable transportation, like a bike.
After dropping Shirley off at the airport at 6:30am I biked to work. I enjoyed passing all the traffic in the construction zones which are everywhere in Winnipeg ( two seasons, winter and construction).
Bike commuting does have it’s challenges. I was greeted with a flat tire when I picked up my bike for the ride home. This was the first ever while commuting. Time to stock up on tubes & patch a few.

Thankfully, they don’t bite but they are thick around the waters edge so there is not too much hanging around the dock right now. This isn’t too much of a problem as it’s misty/raining most of the time so far.

I think today will be a day for doing some tree transplanting.
